OXHEART PRESENTS “THE MIX”: AN ART EXHIBITION AND PERFORMANCE EVENTS

Manhattan’s Lower East Side – THE MIX is a combination of six New York City based artists.  Though the works can be considered abstract, these artists do not just create from within.  They are: Critically aware of their environment from the ecosystem (Ken Cro-Ken); to watersheds (Rebecca Allan); to the rhythm of daily routine (Nathalie Guarracino); to a sense of balance (Lynn Christian); to intimacy of surroundings and materials (Illtyd Barrett); to the concept of duality between painting and sculpture (Monica Delgado).  There is a mix/blend between inner thoughts and visions for the world outside ourselves; a place we cannot live without and needs our “undivided” attention.

Our March 1 Artists! https://oxheart.net/our-march-1-artists/ Tue, 18 Feb 2014 19:22:48 +0000 http://oxheart.net/?p=3449 JANET RUTKOWSKI

Janet RutkowksiBorn in Staten Island, I am a native New Yorker. I attended the High School of Art and Design but didn’t find my calling until ten years after art school. At first I took some life drawing classes at the New School but then I found sculpting. I happened upon the studio of Arturo DiModica ( who is the creator of the infamous bull on Wall Street) where I started to learn stone carving. Then afterwards studied with Mr. Sabastiano Mineo and his son Ron at Art Life Studios on the upper east side. There, I worked in traditional stone and wood carving along with sculpting clay. I was fortunate to have a teacher and to this day , dear friend Ron Mineo who directed me onto my true path of metal working. I studied at the Sculpture Center on the upper east side. Steel / welding was an instant love and I have been working in it ever since. My career in metalwork has gone full circle over the past twenty five years . I began with the abstract, moved onto the functional , extended to the architectural and now have returned back to the sculptural with all disciplines under my belt. I am truly living my dream.

GWEN ADLER

GwenAdlerGwen Adler is a New York City based artist who holds a masters degree in painting from New York University and an undergraduate degree in anthropology and photography from Washington University in St.Louis.  Adler has worked as a photographer, an art teacher, and a theatrical set and costume designer. Interested in the artifacts of our ancestors alongside the products of contemporary material culture, Adler explores candid moments creating abstract compositions that capture the energy and visual stimulation of a place. Her photographs have been featured in exhibitions at the Greenpoint Gallery in Brooklyn, Oxheart events and solo shows at the Walt Meade Gallery (Roxbury Arts Center) and the Manhattan Borough President’s Gallery at the Manhattan Municipal Building.  She is currently preparing for another one person show at the Manhattan Municipal Building in September 2014. An artist’s statement and more of her work can be seen at gwenadler.com.

JEFF BURKE

Jeff BurkeJeffrey J. Burke is an accomplished and  prolific artist that works in multiple mediums, currently living in New York, NY and can be contacted at:  jeffreyjburke@gmail.com

“My objective is to create artwork that is visually pleasing and admired in its environment. My artwork is a reflection of me as a person and my experiences in life. What I love about art is the fact that it can be political, humorous, historical, or just beautiful. However, it is always infinite. I believe the act of creating artwork is magical, in that the transformation of an idea, thought, or emotion into a visual expression is extremely rewarding, even therapeutic.

Another aspect that I appreciate about art is that it evokes thought, conversation, and sometimes debate. Most of all, I love that art as a whole, is open for interpretation. For this reason I  prefer my artwork to speak for itself. On the topic of artists talking or writing about their work, Matisse observed, “The artist puts the best of himself into his pictures; what the artist says does not really matter much.”

You can also visit Jeff’s Facebook Fan Page for a slide show, snapshots of works in progress, thoughts about his work, event information and the latest news & articles.

Andrea Garcia

Andrea GarciaI am an artist living and working in New York City, born and raised in New Jersey. I am graduating from the School of Visual Arts in May 2014 with a Bachelor in Fine Art in Visual and Critical Studies. Working primarily with fibers, yarns, strings, metal, or wood, I find myself creating works made up of contradicting materials. I am interested in the interactions and reactions between different materials; I am inspired by interactions between people, and, also, the interaction between people and materials. My work is constantly transforming and moving; as nature does, as we all do. My goal as an artist is to create scenarios where art coexists with the public and harmonized with the land, to provide the viewer with a metaphysical experience.

BRIAN CONVERY

Brian Convery - courtesy of Steven MolofskyBrian is a visionary artist using oil paints to render his imagined love themed worlds, expressions of sadness, religion and dionysian delight. It’s a world created in which love and freedom are celebrated as highest of human virtue. His influences include his comic books, old nintendo games, and church art since youth.

For much of 2013, Brian was involved in painting weekly in front of guests at New York lounges representing the Art Kartel. Brian was also included in various art shows in NYC’s East Village and Brooklyn in 2013 and in February, he was awarded as runner-up in the Greenpoint Gallery “Eros” art show.

Brian also really enjoys to chill at home with wife and kids. He has a passion and dedication to art since very young, self-entertaining himself as he still does, spending considerate time in his imagined worlds.

Duwenavue Santé Johnson (California Artist)

SanteNative Californian Sante’ studied painting in Bangkok-Thailand, North India, and embroidery arts in Seoul, South Korea and at Royal School of Needlework in England. My main inspiration is from the colors of the season and from my travels to different countries.  I express myself in my art by using multiple techniques and a variation of paint types.  Primarily I use watercolors and gauche.  My paper is made to my specifications in Thailand from the mulberry tree.   I seek out patterns that are inspired by nature.  I also utilize different types of thread to finish the canvas.  I also do embroidery and some of these techniques I incorporate into my paintings.   Hopefully, my work sets a mood and helps others express themselves in various ways.  https://duwenavue.see.me/

Mike Krenner aka “EEK”

me-circle2-01My first creative outlet was at the age of 4 or 5 when I took it upon myself to take a Magic Marker and embellish the upholstery on our family’s dining room chairs (sorry Mom and Dad). That medium changed rather quickly to markers on blank typing paper. Marker on paper is still my preferred means of drawing to this day. I like the immediate resulting bold dark lines and the fact that if a line ends up not going the direction I intended there’s no choice but to make the best of it. In the spring of 2013 I challenged myself to make 1 doodle a day to keep my drawing chops up and post it on my Instagram page. A lifelong love of bad puns and wordplay quickly weaseled its way into the doodles and became the theme. Now well over 300 drawings later I see no sign of stopping after the 1 year mark. The mission with these punny drawings is to wring out as much oddball goofiness from everyday words and expressions as humanly possible and make people smile by doing so. I sign each drawing as “eek”,  a nickname that I’ve had since high school. It’s more fun than “Mike” plus it’s 1 less letter to have to write than if I signed them “Mike”. I’m efficient like that.

….”One of Bryn’s favorite things, I found out, was that she loved not only bringing people together but connecting them so they could expand their artistic and even business opportunities. Some people can just do that, as if they are human Swiffers collecting only the best people that life has to offer and pooling them all together, so they then keep connecting and grouping and spinning off into new webs of human circuitry. A passionate art nerd myself, I was excited when, a few weeks later, she asked me to get involved on the media end.”
